As many of you have already noticed, we (Mark, Sophie and myself) have decided to start a new company, called Brightspark 3 which will be in the business of creating and building internet and software products. Brightspark 3 will also include a new division to be known as Brightspark Studios. Studios will be our services arm which will enable external companies to use our resources and leverage our experience to create new web applications or extend existing web sites.
So why start up a services division? The simple answer is that Brightspark 3 is a business and needs to use its assets in whichever way possible to generate profits for its shareholders. Our team at Brightspark has had many years of experience creating software products, from enterprise software systems to consumer applications. We have not seen it all, but we have seen a lot of it. We have made our mistakes and know what to avoid. Web applications are no different. We have already completed two large scale sophisticated web applications that we designed from scratch and have successfully deployed using state of the art elastic computing platforms. We have also created our own collaboration and agile development management applications that allow us all to have total visibility of the development progress of all of our products. So why not make money by using our experience to build other peoples applications?
I know that we can do a lot better than some other web development houses. I say this from personal experience. A few months ago we were eager to begin development of our first Web application idea. I searched the local market for development shops that could help me to build the site. I found a number of individual developers and a few companies who were in the business of doing exactly what I wanted. I decided to engage a company because it appeared to have some great young talented individuals. The project was a disaster and we had to eventually hire our own guys and start again. The reason for the failure was not the capabilities of the developers, rather the overall management of the process was non existent. A number of individuals were shuffled through our project, dates were missed, features were crammed in at the last moment and we were presented with a large bill. It was not what I bargained for. I was prepared to pay for quality work and experience but I got neither. It was a total waste of money and we never used a single line of their code.
Our offering will be very different. Our focus will be on managing the process and providing our clients with total transparency and software tools to monitor and participate in the process. We fully embrace “agile” software development and our clients will see results at least every two weeks. We have a team of software professionals, most of whom have worked with us in many of our previous companies. We use the latest technologies and are adept at creating web and mobile applications. We will choose who we work with very carefully. We want our customers to be successful and we will ensure that if we take on work, we will be able to deliver.
We have lots of experience in building software and we will help our clients. We know that if we don’t live up to our message, our reputation is at risk....
P.S. Stay tuned for more information and a new Brightspark web site
